MENS LEAGUE

The Western Province Golf Union runs various leagues for different ages and abilities. All the Leagues in this section are those open to all, where age is not a requirement. Please note age based leagues can be found under their own section.

Premier & Premier Reserve

Premier League

This League is the oldest and most important inter-club league in the Western Province, and is played on Sunday. The teams compete for the Stephan Trophy, with each club represented by their best eight players. The format of the League is 18 holes foursomes match play in the morning and 18 holes singles match play in the afternoon.

Premier Reserve

This League consists of 6 teams competing for the Premier Reserve Shield and is played on a Sunday, with each team consisting of six players. The format of the League is 18 holes foursomes match play in the morning and 18 holes singles match play in the afternoon.

1st, 2nd & 3rd Challenge

Each of the three Challenge Leagues will consist of eight players. The format of the League is single match play off scratch, which is played on a Saturday afternoon with the top teams advancing to the finals. The league will be played over 18 holes on a home and away basis with 4 games being played at home and 4 games away.

Mid-Amateur (W & P)

This League are competing for the Mid Am shield, with each team consisting of 8 players, 4 to play at ‘Home’ and 4 to play ‘Away’, and is played on a Saturday afternoon with the top teams advancing to the finals.

The format of the League is singles match play off scratch. The league shall be played over 18 holes on a home and away basis with 4 games being played at home and 4 games away.

Senior

The Seniors League has two sections, the Masters and the Super Seniors.

Masters

In this league they compete for the Masters shield. Only players aged of 50 (fifty) or above are eligible to compete in any given match during this League and each team will consist of 8 players, 4 to play at ‘Home’ and 4 to play ‘Away’. The format of the competition is better ball Stableford off scratch. Stableford is played under the rules of Stroke-play, as such, no putts may be conceded. The competition shall be played over 18 holes.

Super Seniors

Teams compete for the League Shield with each team consisting of 4 players and only players aged of 60 (sixty) or above are eligible to compete in any given match during this League. The format of the competition is better ball Stableford off scratch. Stableford is played under the rules of Stroke-play, as such, no putts may be conceded. The competition shall be played over 18 holes.

Harry Solomons

The Harry Solomon League shall compete for the Harry Solomon Cup. This is a floating trophy presented by JM Logan in memory of the late Harry Solomon who rendered invaluable service to Western Province golf between 1923 and 1956.

Each team shall consist of 16 players. 8 to play at ‘Home’ and 8 to play ‘Away’.

The handicap index range for all players competing in the league is 9.5 to 16.0, inclusive. A player with a handicap index higher than 16.0 may be selected but must play off an index of 16.0.

In order for a player to be eligible, his handicap index must have always been greater than 7.5 from 1 February 2021.

The format of the competition shall be four-ball better-ball, 2nd ball match play played off 90% of the SAGA computed course handicap, the Playing Handicap (PH), as per Rule 6.2 and Appendix C of the Rules of Handicapping. The lowest PH in a four-ball playing off scratch and the remainder of the four-ball playing off a PH equal to the difference between the lowest PH in the four-ball and their PH.

Caddie League

In this league the teams compete for the Caddie League Trophy, and all Western Province clubs submit a team that consists of 6 players (4 players and 2 reserves).

The format of the competition shall be a combined stableford where the best 3 scores count and the team with the highest score at the end of the season wins the trophy.

The Caddie League forms the foundation of how we choose our Western Province Caddie Team which consist of 6 players who play against the Boland Caddie team in a 1-day event.
