Durbanville win junior nail-biter

The final of the WPGU Junior League, played at the beautifully conditioned Royal Cape Golf Club on Saturday 5th March, was a nail-biter until the final putt was sunk.

After regulation play the title holders, Rondebosch Golf Club, and title chasers Durbanville Golf Club were tied at 2 matches all.

Rondebosch’s Ridaah America opened their account by beating Janco Fivaz 4 & 2. Durbanville then drew level when Ian Botha won a closely contested match against Qiyaam Mallick 1up.

The final two matches saw both matches ending 2 & 1 – Hilmi Mallick defeating Loki Loubser and Ayden Senger beating Craig Baba.

With the tie deadlocked each club had to nominate a player to play additional holes – matchplay sudden-death. Both clubs chose their in-form players, namely Hilmi Mallick & Ayden Senger.

With darkness descending, and after 7 pulsating play off holes, Durbanville Golf Club were crowned champions for 2016 when Ayden Senger beat Hilmi Mallick.

The final was a good advert for junior golf in the province with Durbanville reaping the rewards of an excellent junior golf program implemented by their junior coordinator, Lana Orgovanyi.
