Jackie Lester, Past President of Western Province Ladies Golf Union, passed away peacefully on 31st December and will be remembered by many golfers both in Western Province and the Boland. Strand Golf Club awarded life membership to Jackie in February 1997 for her total dedication to the sport.
Amongst her achievements on the course were winning the Northern Cape Championship in 1977, the Southern Cape Championship, not to mention having won the Boland Closed Championship for many years and the Strand Ladies Club Championships 16 consecutive times!
Having served as President of Western Province Ladies Golf Union in 1986/1987, she was the driving force behind the formation of Boland Ladies Golf in 1998 which affiliated directly to the South African Ladies Golf Union (now Womens Golf South Africa). Up until then, this union fell under the Western Province Ladies Golf Union and went through a few name changes after its original WP Country Union (1934).
Jackie’s contribution to women’s amateur golf in Western Province and Boland will be fondly remembered. Her contibution continues to be recognised with the B Division teams at the Town versus Country tournament (played annually between Western Province and Boland) competing for the Jackie Lester trophy.
Past President of Womens Golf South Africa, Cynthia Rayner, paid tribute to Jackie who mentored and encouraged her from the time she was co-opted onto the Executive of Boland Ladies Golf in the latter half of 2000. “It is not often that top golfers give up their time for golf administration, but Jackie committed herself tirelessly to making the new Union work effectively, and her passion for junior and development golf was legendary. There is no doubt in my mind that I would never have become the President of WGSA if it had not been for Jackie’s mentorship. What an amazing generous spirit she had – always willing to share her knowledge with others in order to pass on her passion for the game.”
Jackie is survived by her husband Ken with whom she shared a wonderful innings of 55 years, and their two sons Anthony & Kevin, daughters-in-law Jeanette & Nellie, and 5 grandchildren.
Womens Golf Western Province expresses its condolences and sympathies to her family and all her friends.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, 6th January 2016 at Strand Methodist Church (36 Church Street, Strand) at 15h00.
