Ideal golfing weather greeted the 40 players participating in the prestigious Mini Masters sponsored by the Golfing Association of Pinelands at Mowbray Golf Club this past Sunday, the 24th July. This was the 26th edition of the event – first won by Alan Michell (Clovelly) who has subsequently campaigned on the Sunshine Professional Tour.
The event has seen many well known names win – this is testament to the status of the event. Trevor Immelman won 4 straight years (1994 through to 1997) eventually also winning the MASTERS at Augusta in 2008.
This year Jason Hale (Somerset West GC) was crowned champion after two solid rounds of 73 and 71 gave him an overall total of 144 to triumph by 3 shots. Jason has had a very productive past month – winning both the Parow (4th July) and Milnerton (5th July) Junior Opens. Jason had a very consistent day – in the morning round three birdies and 4 bogeys in his 73 whilst the afternoon saw 4 birdies and 3 bogeys.
Lourens Loubser (Durbanville GC) led after the morning session with a 71 but finished with a 78 in the afternoon to eventually finish 4th.
The under 15 division was again won by 14 year old Tristan Galant (Mowbray GC) on 147 – finishing overall joint runner –up with Deon Germishuys (Strand). Tristan had the equal best afternoon score of 71 (together with Jason) after posting a 76 in the morning.
This event brings the best junior golfers from the Western Province together and will always remain an important fixture on the local junior calendar.
