Michael Sherriff stood his ground against a fierce ‘South Easter’ and the opposition to win the Rondebosch Open with a 3-under-par total 141 68/73 on Sunday.
Six birdies set Sherriff up with a four shot lead after the morning round and, even with a final round 1-over-par 73, his lead was never challenged and walked away with the victory.
This is Michael’s third win on the Premier Amateur Tour (PAT), his other wins at the Kuils River Open, followed by the Westlake Open.
His nearest rival was Carlo O’Rielly. Carlo carded a level par morning round, but with the wind strengthening in the afternoon was never able to make a dent in Sherriff’s lead., and had to settle for the runner-up spot again.
Rondebosch locals, Shane Howe and Kyran Hawkins both posted 1-over-par 73 in the morning but, by the time play had finished, the wind had swept through their scores and had to sign for a total 10-over-par, 154.
SAGDB junior, Hilmi Mallick, playing on his home course was a little more consistent than his clubmates. With scores of 76/75 151, he finished T3 together with Paul Colditz and Elton James.
The odds of holing out with one shot for an amateur is about 12 500 to 1 chance – Atlantic Beach’s Ashleigh Mills took her chance on the par 3, 12th and holed out for her first hole-in-one.
