A cold breeze may have been blowing over KD Mowbray Golf Club but the various divisions of the 2021 Western Province Schools Golf League Finals were being hotly contested.

The WP Schools Golf League consists of a NORTH and a SOUTH League – both leagues are further subdivided into an A, B and C league. The WP Schools Golf League season extends from April through to August with the winners of the various leagues gathering, at the culmination of the league season, to contest the schools golf league finals. Although it was a somewhat disruptive league season the vast majority of the 156 fixtures were completed.

On the day history was being made by Bishops – by contesting the 3 finals they had the opportunity to do what no other school has yet achieved – walk away with all 3 titles.

The A league final was one of the most closely contested finals in years with TGSE and Bishops ’A’ ending in a 3 all stalemate. Wins by TGSE’s Njoroge Kibugu and Philco Venter were cancelled out with wins by Bishops numbers 4 and 5, namely, Sebastian Dorward and Reyne de Klerk. TGSE’s inform Craig Jacobs, at number 2, scored a resounding 4&3 win over Daniel Davidson. At this stage TGSE led 3 games to 2. The final match was to decide where the 2021 schools golf league trophy was heading. Christopher Gutuza from Bishops beat Timothy Daniels 2 &1 – now the fixture was tied. As per the league rules a count-out ensued with TGSE winning by 1 single hole!!

This was 3rd time lucky for TGSE after losing the 2018 final to Bishops (3.5-2.5) as well as the 2019 final to Rondebosch (4.5-1.5). The WP Schools Golf League was not held in 2020. For 3rd place, the well balanced Milnerton β€˜A’ side was too strong for Durbanville β€˜A’ winning 4.5 to 1.5. Wins by Justin Behrens, Luca Wolvaardt, Jarred Michaels and Adam Johnston saw Milnerton comfortably home.

The B league final saw Bishops β€˜B’ beat SAGDB (Atlantis) 4-2. Wins by SAGDB’s Liam Adonis and Quewin Botha were cancelled out by Adam Buckham, Michael Cadiz, Jack Brummer and Kayan Jaga. De Kuilen High clinched the 3rd position.

The C league final saw Bishops β€˜C’ come up against a strong Durbanville β€˜B’. This league is decided on the stableford points format with 4 of the 6 individual scores counting towards the team total. In the end a narrow 7 point difference was sufficient for Durbanville β€˜B’ to win – Durbanville β€˜B’ 115 Bishops β€˜C’ 108. The leading player on the day was Durbanvilles’s,Β  Zandre Hansen on a decisive 33 points. For 3rd place Strand ’B’ scored a resounding 101 – 87 win against a youthful KD Mowbray Development β€˜B’.

A great day of golf at the end of a difficult year but, I am sure, enjoyed by all.
