2023 WP Women’s Amateur Championship

This year’s WP Women’s Amateur Championship was held at Somerset West Golf Club, located in the heart of Helderberg. Despite the heavy rainfall during the week prior to the tournament, the course was in great condition.

Sunday, 26 March, marked the first day of the tournament. There was beautiful weather and a slight wind that picked up in the late afternoon. A total of 47 competitors competed for the 36-hole Championship & Silver Division Stroke play championship, as well as for a place in the Match Play Event.

Championship Division:

 The Champion Division Strokeplay was won by Chloe Royston (Cotswold Downs) with a total score of 148. She posted a round of 72 in round one and four over par in round two. The runner up was Bobbi Brown (Steenberg) with a total score of 152, posting rounds of 74 & 78.

In the Match Play semi-finals, Chloe Royston defeated Jamine Furstenburg 3/2 to advance to the Finals against Bobbi Brown, who defeated Olivia Wood 7/6 to secure her place in the Finals.

Jasmine Furstenburg came third after defeating Olivia Wood 2/1 in the Finals.

Chloe kept her winning streak alive on the tournament’s final day when she defeated Bobbi Brown 2 up after a close match.

Championship Flight Division:

Charlotte Millard was victorious over Isabella Ferreira in the semi-finals, winning 5/4. Huysamen defeated Kaitlyn van de Vyver 4/3 and earned a spot in the Finals against Charlotte.

In a stunning performance, Charlotte defeated Ashley by 7/5 in the finals. Isabella defeated Kaitlyn by 2/1.

Silver Division:

In the Silver Division, Isabella Lesley Heber (c/i) emerged as the winner with a total score of 175 for the two rounds, with Zoey Rhoda following in second place with a score of 175 for the two rounds. Senayah Moodliar placed third with a score of 178 for the two rounds, just two shots behind the leaders.

In the Match Play Semi Finals, Isabella Lesley Heber defeated Theresa Steytler with a score of 7/6.

The match between Alli – Anne van Schalkwyk and Leonie Swart was intense, but Alli – Anne came out on top and won 4/3.

In the finals, Isabella defeated Alli-Anne 5/4, securing the Silver division Match Play title, while Leonie defeated Theresa to capture the 3rd place spot.

Bronze Division:

A fine day of weather greeted the Bronze Division on Monday as they played 18 holes. In a highly competitive field, there was only a four-shot difference between the winner and the third-place finisher. The Bronze Division was won by Gwen Baumgart with a score of 90, closely followed by Susan Oosthuizen in second place with a score of 91. The third-place finisher was Rosa Hatz with a score of 94.

After the strokeplay tournament concluded, the semi-finals of the Bronze Division were played.

It was Gwen Baumgart who emerged as the winner after defeating Rosa-Linda Wessels in a tense final with 3/2. Despite a tight match throughout, Rosa Hatz managed to make a match-saving stroke on the green to take third place, beating Susan Oosthuizen 1 up.
