2024 WP Senior Masters Champion – Cameron Johnston

Event Overview: The 2024 WP Senior Masters Championship held at the Milnerton Golf Links Host Club on the 17th and 18th of March 2024 showcased some exceptional golfing talent amidst the challenging weather conditions typical of the Western Cape. Sponsored by Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages and The Barnard’s Barnyard, the championship witnessed a display of skill and resilience from seasoned golfers.

Day 1 Highlights: The tournament commenced amidst the notorious South Easter, presenting a formidable challenge with winds reaching 40-50 km per hour. However, Cameron Johnston of Milnerton Golf Club displayed remarkable composure, delivering a standout performance with a round of 68, the sole round in the 60s. His round included birdies on the 3rd, 8th, 10th, 14th, and 15th holes, along with an impressive eagle on the 5th. Despite unforced errors on holes 12 and 13, where he relinquished three shots, Johnston’s performance set the tone for the championship. Notable sub-par rounds were also posted by Weyers (Atlantic Beach Links), Hugo Calitz (Durbanville), and Dirk van der Merwe (Bellville).

Day 2 Highlights: Day 2 witnessed favorable conditions for birdie opportunities, with Cameron Johnston continuing his stellar performance from the previous day. Johnston’s round mirrored a script from an Academy Award-winning movie, featuring an exceptional display of golfing prowess. His scorecard boasted eleven 4s, five 3s, and two 2s, punctuated by eight birdies and a solitary bogey. Johnston’s dominance propelled him far ahead of his competitors, showcasing a sublime performance throughout the tournament.

Final Results: Cameron Johnston’s exceptional performance culminated in a resounding victory, finishing at -11, a remarkable seven shots clear of the runner-up, Weyers. Despite Weyers’ tenacity, his lack of birdies ultimately distanced him from Johnston. Hugo Calitz of Durbanville demonstrated consistency with rounds of 71 and 70 (-3), securing a commendable solo third position.
