The 2025 Western Province Amateur Championship Stroke Play unfolded with promise and palpable excitement on its opening round. Held at Milnerton Golf Club, the tournament welcomed an impressive contingent of seventeen of South Africa’s top thirty golfers, assembling a formidable and exceptionally talented field. With some of the country’s brightest golfing prospects vying for supremacy, the stage was set for a compelling championship. The blend of stunning course aesthetics, challenging yet fair playing conditions, and the depth of talent ensured the tournament got off to a captivating start.

Round 1: Ivan Verster, Janko van der Merwe, and Timothy Daniels jointly lead the field with impressive scores of 66 (-4), signaling the high caliber of golf anticipated throughout the championship. Closely trailing were Ethan Gough with a score of 68 (-2), alongside Noah Peens, Tobias De Flaming, and Cole Cruikshank, all posting 69s (-1).

Round 2: Strategic Shifts proved to be a pivotal “moving day”, with Ethan Gough and Cole Cruickshank both firing 67s (-3), while Ruben van der Berg impressed with a 66 (-4), jostling for position among contenders like Ivan Verster, Logan Leisher, and Vuyisani Makama who each carded 68s (-2). The cut saw the top 65 players (+Ties) progress, setting the stage for heightened intensity in the subsequent rounds.

Rounds 3 and 4: overcast skies and intermittent rain, the third and fourth rounds delivered compelling golf. Noteworthy low rounds included Logan Leisher and Matthew Mortimer both achieving 64s (-6), with Johndre Ludick etching his name into the the tournament’s lowest round, a scintillating 63 (-7). Critically, Ivan Verster exhibited unwavering composure, posting a 65 (-5) in the final round to secure the championship title.

In a display of consistent excellence, Ivan Verster triumphed with a score of 13-under-par, clinching the Dowie Dunn Memorial Trophy by a margin of three shots. Ruben van der Berg finished second, followed by Logan Leisher in third, Vuyisani Makama fourth, and Matthew Mortimer rounding out the top five.
