EVAN MARAIS TRIUMPHS AT SOMERSET WEST OPEN IN PLAYOFF DRAMA!
The 2025 Somerset West Open kicked off under ideal scoring conditions.
In Round 1 Joshua Wiese (AB Links) and Taahir Mallick (Rondebosch) setting the early pace. Both players carded impressive 3-under-par 69s, taking the clubhouse lead after Round 1. They were closely followed by Dan Copeman (Westlake), Brent Kirstein (Clovelly) and Evan Marais (Clovelly) who trailed by a stroke with 2-under-par 70s.
As the afternoon session unfolded, conditions took a turn with winds picking up and making the course a challenging test. Joshua Wiese posted a 1-over-par for Round 2, which still left him the clubhouse leader with a 2-under-par total. However, Evan Marais showed his consistency by carding a level-par round in the afternoon, highlighted by a clutch par on the final hole to force a playoff.
The playoff took place on the 18th hole, where Evan Marais and Joshua Wiese battled it out. In the end, Marais precision paid off, as he topped Wiese on the first playoff hole to claim victory in the 2025 Somerset West Open.
In the Women’s Division, Odette Booysen (Westlake) carded a level par (72) for the opening round to take a one-shot lead over Zayaan Hendricks (AB Links).
Zayaan Hendricks who maintained her composure, finishing on 1-under-par (71) for round 2 to take the clubhouse lead on level-par, However Odette Booysen Clinched the Women’s title with a single shot after a stellar 1-under-par 71 in round 2 to finish on (-1) for the tournament, While Vicki Traut (Erinvale) rounded out the podium with rounds of 77 & 72.
