A CLEAN SWEEP FOR KARL AT THE RONDEBOSCH OPEN!
Karl Ochse (Bellville) is riding high after claiming the 2023 Rondebosch Open title. His performance on Sunday was not adversely affected by the inclement weather, as he dealt the right hand of cards to outperform his competition. Birdies abound after 30mm of rain in the morning.
With his usual laid back, calm, collaborative approach, Ocshe opened round 1 with a score of 70 (-2); he made four birdies on holes 10, 13, 16 and 18. This was offset by bogeys on holes 5 & 11.
Matthew Lotz (Milnerton), who has been in exceptional form lately, matched Osche’s opening round score of 70 (-2). In round 2, Lotz’s stack of cards fell apart after a mediocre 75 put him out of contention. The scorecard was marred by bogeys on holes 3, 4, 11 & 12 and a double on hole 15.
Andries van der Vyver (Strand) is another notable youngster ascending in the rankings. The runner-up finish propelled him into the Top 20. In addition to Karl, he was the only player to break par on the day with rounds of 71 and 71. As solid as a rock, he recorded 28 pars, five birdies, and three bogeys in the round.
Karl’s second round was one for the books. He stepped up the gas posting the lowest round of the day, a 67 (-5) with one eagle on hole 10, and three additional birdies on holes 13, 15 & 17. There were no signs of a drop shot. The victory moves Karl up into the top 10 rankings.
A course advantage paved the way for Ashraf Prince from Rondebosch to win the Mid-Amateur Section by one stroke over Geno Belfiore from Milnerton. A steady round of 70 (-2) was posted by Prince, which included four birdies on holes 3, 10, 13 & 18, offset by two bogeys on holes 4 & 11.
Candice Woodbridge (AB Links) and Odette Booysen (Royal Cape) were locked in a back-and-forth battle with only one shot separating them. Candice edged Booysen by one shot. Woodbridge demonstrated her composure by posting rounds of 82 and 83, demonstrating the reason she was selected to represent WP.
