The 2023 WP Mid-Amateur Championship was held at the immaculate Erinvale Golf Club. A newly renovated clubhouse greeted players upon arrival, setting the tone for an unforgettable experience. Erinvale Golf Club is considered to be one of the finest courses in the Western Cape, designed by none other than Gary Player himself. It features an exciting layout that features numerous water hazards along with lightning-fast greens that will pose a challenge to all participants. I

n ideal conditions, the players could not have hoped for better weather on Thursday, as the sun shone and there was barely a breath of wind which suggested that this would be a low scoring event.

The top 5 players were all under par after 9 holes. The leaderboard changed continuously as the cold temperatures of the afternoon began to prevail. We saw several Boland Golf players take a run at the top position as their local knowledge proved crucial. Despite being 2 under par at the turn, David Barnard (Devonvale) had a couple of costly bogeys on the way in that cost him the top position.

Erinvale member Greg Scrace had a rough start to the round, posting a +3 at the turn, but made three birdies on the last three holes to share sixth place. The Southbroom Golf Club’s Gavin Sole started the day with two birdies within the first three holes, which placed him in a good position for the day. A combination of bogeys and birdies rounded out his round with a score of – 2 under par.

Erinvale local and Metropolitan member, Andrew Georgiou, led a late charge on the back nine, establishing one of the most exciting finishes in recent memory. Andrew tallied seven birdies with only two drop shots, and his persistence enabled him to claim the top honors with a score of 67.

Unfortunately, mother nature was on the prowl and play was suspended on the final day of the 36-hole championship. Following persistent overnight rain, gusting winds and extreme conditions in the morning, the second round of the tournament was called off due to unplayable conditions.
