ANDREW GEORGIOU TAMES ‘THE MET’

From its inception in 1895, the Metropolitan golf course has been a central Cape Town jewel. The MET (as it is affectionately known) was commissioned by the City of Cape Town and rebuilt in 2010 by Mark Müller, a local golf course architect. The Met has 18 holes, each with separate tees, along with 14 lush greens and 9 beautiful fairways. This parkland ground features bentgrass greens and Kikuyu fairways.

The ideal weather conditions made it a scoring paradise for the players. As the predicated cold front passed through late afternoon, the last 9 holes proved to be more challenging.

The Metropolitan Open featured a limited field of 40 players.

Open division

Matthew Cooper led the field after Round 1 with 2 shots after scoring a great 65 (-5). There was still work to do in the second round as Sean Howell, Andrew Georgiou and Karl Ochse were close behind. Both Sean and Andrew finished round 1 with 67 (-3) and Karl with 68 (-2).

Andrew Georgiou, a fellow Metropolitan member, ended Round 2 with a fantastic score of 62 (-8), which ultimately resulted in him winning the MET Open with a score of 129 (-11).

A score of 134 (-6) earned Matthew Cooper second place with a second round score of 69 (-1).

Ochse posted a 68 (-2) in his second round to finish third with a total of 136 (-4).

Matthew Lotz (Milnerton) opened his campaign with a mediocre 75 (+5). After finding his groove in round two, Lotz posted an impressive 64 (-6) which gave him a 4th place finish with a score of 139 (-1).

Women’s Division

Odette Booysen and Kim Albertus, both multiple winners this year, battled for first place in Women’s Division.

Kim had a disappointing first round of 88 (+18), while Odette extended the lead to nine shots following her 79 (+9) in the first round.

Despite Kim’s perseverance in Round 2, she finished with a steady 83 (+13) for a total of 171 (+31). It was not enough to overcome Odette Booysen, who posted the lowest round of the day with 78 (+8), finishing her tournament with a score of 157 (+17), and claiming yet another Women’s First Place.

A maiden victory was achieved by David Thompson over his rivals, Kyle Lee and Ian Truter in the Mid-Amateur Section. David finished with a score of 71 (+1), Kyle finished in second with a score of 72 (+2), and Ian finished third with a score of 73 (+3).
