ANDRIES VAN DER VYVER DEFENDS CHAMPIONS JUNIOR TOUR TITLE!
Andries defends “Champions Junior Tour” title.
Sunday 15th October – In a repeat from last year, 16-year-old Andries van der Vyver (Strand GC) defended his “Champions Junior Tour” title in windy conditions at Royal Cape Golf Club.
Royal Cape is South Africa’s oldest course, set to the backdrop of Table Mountain and Devil’s Peak. The club began on the 14th November 1885 (nearly 138 years ago).
The event, the 3rd edition of the “Champions Junior Tour Final”, brings together qualifiers from various selected local junior events. A total of 14 juniors teed it up on the day to see who the champion would be.
After the completion of the first 9 holes Henru Walters (Durbanville GC) was leading on a total of 2 under par with two players in hot pursuit, Jaydon Galant (KD Mowbray GC) and Andries van der Vyver, both only a single stroke behind.
The players found the going tough at the start of their 2nd nine (from hole 1). As players dropped shots, Andries van der Vyver was steadiness personified – his only bogey being at the par 5 5th hole to finish the event on level par 72. Jaydon Galant finished 2nd on 73, followed by Henru Walters on a 74.
Andries van der Vyver is currently ranked 20th on the national Under 19 Order of Merit. On the day at Royal Cape Golf Club a strong field was assembled with Jack Buchanan (Milnerton GC) and Pearce Lewin (Steenberg GC) ranked 2nd and 3rd nationally at under 19 level respectively, also in the field.
After the completion of another fine junior golfing year, a sincere thank you to all the clubs in the Western Province for their promotion of junior golf.
