Brian Mampies wins the 2023 WP Senior Masters Championship.
Brian Mampies (Royal Cape Golf Club) outwits and outplays his competitors at the 2023 WP Senior Masters Championship.
Westlake Golf Club, the host venue for the 2023 WP Senior Masters Championship, rests amidst the amethyst slopes of the Silvermine Mountains. It has earned a reputation as one of the most popular golf courses in the Western Cape, with a well-maintained parkland layout that challenges both beginners and seasoned golfers.
In spite of a sunny, windless day on Sunday, Mother Nature made her presence felt on Monday with torrential downpours that swept across the mountains and began their journey across the golf course. This left all golfers in a state of humiliation.
Having posted the only subpar round (71), which included birdies on holes 2, 7, 15 & 16 and bogeys on holes 1, 17, 18, Greg Woodbridge (Atlantic Beach Links) expected to extend his performance into the final round.
Among the highlights of the day was Duane Fisher’s round (Royal Cape) who recorded a triple bogey on hole 2, four bogeys on holes 4, 9, 11 & 12, four birdies on holes 5, 7, 8 & 18 as well as a hole-in-one on hole 3. Following a first-round score of 73, he held second place heading into the final round.
In close pursuit of the leader, Rowlin Adonis, Hennie Walters, Tony Louw, and Weyers Janse van Rensburg, all of whom tallied a round of 74, were 3 shots adrift.
A few players were within striking distance of the championship trophy.
The scoring conditions for the final round were somewhat ambiguous given the weather conditions from the outset.
During the substantial downpour, the greens became flooded and unplayable, and the tournament director made the decision that it was in the best interest of the tournament to observe the weather conditions and make a final decision after an hours’ delay.
A final decision was reached at 10:25 a.m. and the horns were blown at 10:30 a.m. for the championship to resume.
In spite of the element’s players had to contend with, three players recorded final rounds of 76.
Cameron Johnston (King David Mowbray) recorded two birdies on holes 5 & 11, which were offset by a double bogey on hole 6 and four bogeys on holes 1, 6, 12 & 15.
In Kevin van Wouw’s round of 76, two birdies were recorded on holes 3 & 8. Meanwhile, six bogeys were recorded on holes 2, 5, 9, 10, 14 & 15.
Tony Louw (Atlantic Beach Links) demonstrated his true talent with a lone ranger birdie on hole 7, three bogeys on holes 9, 10 & 12 and an unforced double bogey on hole 2.
As for the star of the show, Brain Mampies, who played with incredible gusto, posting a round of 73 to garner much attention. His round included three birdies on holes 3, 7 & 16 and four bogeys on holes 5, 9, 19 & 17. It’s a testament to his superb abilities as one of the best Senior golfers in the Western Cape.
Mampies won by one shot over Woodbridge, who ran out of steam at the end and blew his chances with two extremely uncharacteristic double bogeys on 12 & 15, leaving him one shot short of a playoff.
