COLE CRUICKSHANK CLENCHES THE ROYAL CAPE OPEN!

Cole Cruickshank – 2023 Royal Cape Open Champion

This past Sunday, the oldest club in Cape Town, Royal Cape, hosted 84 players. As play started at 7:50, conditions were favorable and low scores were surely expected from the talented field. The greenkeeping staff made sure the course was in pristine condition which was highlighted by the amount of under par rounds the top contenders posted.

After the first 18 holes, Cole Cruickshank (Royal Cape) posted a brilliant score of 6 under par. Hot on his heels were Hannes Conradie (Bellville) and Matthew Cooper (Clovelly) with 3 under and 2 under par respectively.

It was up to Hannes and Matthew to chase the leader, but the Royal Cape member substantially extended his lead by shooting a final round score of 2 under par. He would go on to win by seven shots over Hannes and Matthew. Gideon van der Vyver (Strand) finished in 4th place with scores of 71 and 74 followed by Bjorn Nord from Milnerton, carding rounds of 72 and 75 to take 5th spot. Boland player David Barnard (Devonvale) took best net title with 142.

Kyle Lee – 2023 Royal Cape Open Mid-Amateur Winner

In the Mid-Am division, Kyle Lee (Milnerton) finished on top signifying a 72, while Christian Helmbold (Westlake) signed for a 73. He went on to win the best net score. Matthew Mills (Clovelly) rounded out the top 3 with a score of 74.

Odette Booysen – 2023 Royal Cape Open Women’s Section Winner

The women’s division was filled with drama as the leaders after round one continued to vie for the top spot. After the first 18 holes, Odette Booysen (Royal Cape) and Beverley Button (Metropolitan) were tied at the top, 2 shots clear of Zayaan Hendricks (Atlantic Beach).

During the last round, the leaderboard kept shifting as the ladies fought back with Isabella Crafford (Strand) and Ashley Huysamen (Durbanville) chasing down the leaders. Despite this, Odette Booysen maintained her composure and determinedly won by three strokes over Ashely and Isabella. Odette’s sister – Christian Booysen (Royal Cape) won best net.
