COOPER IS BACK IN THE WINNER’S CIRCLE

Erinvale Golf Club was greeted with winds, rain, and snow-capped mountains on Sunday, 9 July 2023.

Having to traverse damp fairways for 36 holes, competitors had to endure extraordinarily challenging conditions. It took patience and endurance to reach the summit.

Despite the considerable amount of rain received, the greenkeeping staff at Erinvale did an admirable job getting the course in pristine condition. This was for one of the most anticipated tournaments on the Premier Amateur Tour.

Matthew Cooper (Clovelly) returned to the winner’s circle with a fine performance, demonstrating why he’s one of the WPG’s top young golfers.

With this empathic victory, he now leads the PAT with 118 points over South Africa’s number one player, Altin van der Merwe.

Cooper shot 70 and 74 to finish level par. His two rounds consisted of nine birdies, nine bogeys, and 18 pars. Exceptionally well composed performance.

Jack Brugman (Strand) finished runner-up in back-to-back events. Both tournaments were decided by three shots. He posted rounds of 72 and 75.

Francios Cilliers (Strand) finished third after a count-out procedure with rounds of 70 and 77.

Geno Belfiore (Milnerton) won the Mid-Amateur Section with a steady round featuring two birdies, two bogeys and 14 pars. Although it was a boring golf round, it propelled him to victory.

Michael Koster (Somerset West) placed runner-up on a well-deserved 74, earning his first podium appearance.

Vicki Traut showed her class, playing fine golf on home turf. Her rounds of 76 and 73 were sufficient to give her victory bragging rights.
