Down to the wire at the final round
PRETORIA, 11 April 2019 – Some epic clashes are on the cards in both the senior and super senior divisions after the third round of the SA Senior A-Division Inter-Provincial wrapped up at Wingate Park Country Club on Thursday.
SENIORS
Central Gauteng – still undefeated after five matches – will be hunting their fourth successive victory and will face Western Province and Eastern Province in Friday’s final three-way title fight.
The Lions defeated KwaZulu-Natal 8 – 4 to cement their position at the top spot in the log on 10 points, but Western Province mowed down North West 10 – 2 to get within striking distance of the defending champions.
Although Province lost 5.5 – 6.5 to Gauteng North, the side has 8 points and will take a game point advantage of 40.5 into the final round. This small, but valuable margin could prove very handy should the final result come down to a count-out.
Gauteng North also scored big with an 11 – 1 result against North West.
Double success on day three moved the Daisies into third on the log and boosted their game points count to 39. Gauteng North will go into battle with Southern Cape and fourth-placed KwaZulu-Natal.
In Thursday’s other matches, Southern Cape beat Eastern Province 7 – 5, while Border halved against Eastern Province and defeated Southern Cape 7.5 – 4.5.
SUPER SENIORS
The Super Senior Division tussle for glory is also poised on a knife’s edge.
Undefeated over the first two days of the competition, Central Gauteng led the standings but after drawing 3-all with Western Province, the log leaders will start the final round tied on 5 points with Province.
Central Gauteng has 12.5 game points, though, to the 10.5 of Western Province and will try to capitalise on that advantage when the team goes into battle with Southern Cape and Gauteng North on Friday.
Western Province will need to pull out all the stops in their three-way battle with KwaZulu-Natal and Boland.
Gauteng North gave Boland a 4.5 – 1.5 hiding to move into third spot with 7 points, while KwaZulu-Natal downed Southern Cape 3.5 – 2.5 to take fourth in the log on 4 points.
