Jack and Craig start 2022 with emphatic wins

Presentation1

The first local junior golf event of the 2022 season kicked off on Monday, the 3rd January, at an extremely blustery Parow Golf Club. The conditions proved to be difficult – as evidenced by the scores recorded on the day.

The 2021 winner, Jack Buchanan (Milnerton), did it again in 2022 – an up and down round of 74. Birdies were recorded at the 8th (par 4), 11th (par 4), 12th (par 5) and the 15th (par 4) but bogeys at 4 holes as well as a double drop at the par 3 13th was the story for the day. It was a tight race to the finish line – Jungwi Lee (Royal Cape GC) needed a par at the 18th and final hole but a disappointing double drop 6 saw him finish 2nd on a gross 75.

Three players finished on 76 – Justin Behrens (Milnerton), Eric Venter (Kuils River) and Mitch Phigeland (Atlantic Beach Links). The B division was won by Jared Austin (Atlantic Beach Links) on a count-out from Caleb Kiego (Kuils River) on a gross 83. The U13A division was won by 10 year old Luke Jacobs (Royal Cape) on a fine gross 81 with 9 year old Tyler Arendse (Atlantis) winning the U13B division with 38 pts off his course handicap of 25.

The KUILS RIVER Junior Championship followed on Tuesday, the 4th January. A hot windless start but it progressively got somewhat windy. Jan Stals van Rooyen (Royal Cape) was the 2021 champion – he gave a good account of himself on the day – finishing 2nd with a fine 71. Craig Jacobs (Atlantic Beach Links) continued where he left off in 2021 – completing a steady round of 69 to win the 2022 edition. Craig has put together a great portfolio of wins of late – besides winning a number of local events, the Cape Town Junior Open victory as well as the gold medal at the U19 Junior IPT were other recent highlights.

Level par scores of 72 were recorded by James Boustead (Erinvale) and Conrick Lucas (KD Mowbray) with Eric Venter (Kuils River) having a 73.

The B division was decided on a count-out with local member Rory Thomas edging out Athi Mgodeli (KD Mowbary) on a gross 80. The U13As was won by Vincent Venter (Erinvale) on 78 with Isabella Heber (KD Mowbray), improving on her 2nd place at Parow, with 37 individual stableford points.
