JUNGWI TAMES THE WEATHER AT RONDEBOSCH!

23rd June 2023 – A cold, blustery, Cape winters day, coupled with intermittent light showers, did not deter Royal Cape’s Jungwi Lee from recording a fine 2 under par 70 to win the RONDEBOSCH Junior Championship.

An impressive start with a birdie at the opening hole allowed Jungwi to get into rhythm early – in fact this was the only birdie recorded on the day at this tricky 307 metre par 4. The difficult 383 metre par 4 7th proved to be an extremely challenging hole – here Jungwi had a double drop – but quickly recovered with a birdie at the next to turn one over. An exceptional 3 under par coming home, which included an eagle 3 at the 452 metre par 5 13th, helped Jungwi post this fine 70. Jungwi has had an exceptional year locally – in February Jungwi won both the PAT Parow Open (66 gross) and the PAT Kuils River Open (65 gross).

A group of 3 players finished on 72, which was also a mighty fine effort, considering the weather – namely resident member Taahir Mallick, Andries van der Vyver (Strand) and Oliver Scriven (Pearl Valley). A highlight for Taahir was the eagle 3 at the par 5 17th but the double drop 6 at the 11th was costly. Andries was on a roll with birdies at 12, 13 and 14 but they dried up thereafter. Oliver was steadiness personified, 3 birdies and 3 bogeys. A distant tied 5th was three players on gross 76, namely Pearce Lewin (Steenberg), Jaydon Galant (KD Mowbray) and Bjorn Nord (Milnerton).

The B division was a tight affair with Ruan Jacobs (Kuils River) securing a gross 82 beating 13-year-old Braam Smit (Durbanville) by a single shot. Kazio de Leeuw (Atlantis) secured the C division on 32 stableford points.

The Under 13 division provided another highlight with Luke Jacobs (Royal Cape) completing a superb gross 72 (4 birdies and 4 bogeys) whilst Amina Hendricks (Atlantic Beach) was the winner in the Under 13B division on 31 stableford points.
