Royal Cape Junior Champion – Junkai Zhu

2 October 2023 – The Royal Cape Junior Championship saw a first-time winner in 13-year-old Junkai Zhu (Bellville).

Junkai recently arrived from China to further his studies in South Africa and to improve his golf. A bright golfing future lies ahead for this youngster.

Although the Royal Cape course played long, due to the record rainfall recorded in the Western Cape, a fine gross 73 saw him home by a clear 2 strokes. Three birdies – at the par 5 7th, par 5 11th and par 4 12th was offset by 4 bogeys.

A group of 3 players finished on 75 – Nicholas Schrieder (Steenberg), Oliver Scriven (Pearl Valley) and Nicolas van der Vyver (Strand).

The B division (handicaps from 8.0 through to 14.9) was tightly contested with Dean Saunders (Clovelly) winning the count out on a gross 80, from local member Benjamin Smuts.

Other results saw Tyra Booysen (Rondebosch) the C division victor on 31 Stableford points, the Under 13As Duma Inathi (Atlantic Beach Links) on a gross 90 and the Under 13B winner was MC Fourie (Kuils River) on an impressive 39 Stableford points.
