Justin Behrens wins a tight race at Durbanville

A beautiful autumn day greeted a full field of juniors participating in the DURBANVILLE Junior Championship.  To complement the awesome day, Durbanville Golf Club presented a course that was in outstanding condition.

This tournament was the 3rd leg of the WP Junior Golf Championship Tour, a series of 9 events culminating in the 36 hole final on the 10th October. Travis Procter (at Milnerton) and Christopher Gutuza (at Parow) have already qualified – Justin Behrens with a well compiled 70 added his name to this list yesterday with his 1 shot victory.

Justin turned 3 under after 4 birdies and a lone drop shot at the par three 7th.  The 2nd 9 saw drop shots at both par 5s but a birdie at the difficult 14th saw him home in 37. The par 4 14th only yielded 2 birdies yesterday from the field of 110 players!

Christopher Gutuza was cruising along nicely but a disastrous 6 on final hole saw him being relegated to 3rd position after his 71. A different story presented itself when 14 year old Jaydon Galant recorded a birdie on the final hole – a fine 71 to win the count-out against Christopher. A total of 5 players finished on level par 72 – Thomas Joubert (Stellenbosch), Pearce Lewin (Steenberg), Craig Jacobs (Bellville), Murray Boast (Milnerton) and Isabella van Rooyen (Clovelly).

Isabella van Rooyen has had an exceptional year being leading medallist at the WGSA 72 holes Team Championship at Kingswood Golf Estate last month,  NOMADS SA Girls Rose Bowl champion and WGSA Most Improved Open Amateur of the Year, amongst her many achievements.

In the other divisions Anne-Isabel Scheltema (Devonvale) won the B division with a gross 82, Zayaan Hendricks (Royal Cape) 39 points in the C division and Isabella Heber (KD Mowbray) winning the U13B division on 36 points – a clean sweep for the girls.

12 year old Booye Walters won his first U13 title – a fine gross 75 which consisted of 6 bogeys and 3 birdies. A level par 36 followed by a 3 over 39.
