Nail biting finish at Katberg Challenge

Nail biting finish at Katberg Challenge

The beautiful Katberg Eco Golf Estate hosted the 2021 Katberg Challenge U13/U15 Interprovincial.

The course was in superb condition with the greens being particularly good. Overall the weather was perfect during the three tournament days – ideal windless golfing conditions.

The forerunner to the Katberg Challenge was the Fish River Challenge – Western Province (WP) first competed in 2004. The latter ended in 2017 and this being the 3rd occasion that the event was held at Katberg (the 2020 edition was cancelled due to Covid). Western Province has a proud record in this prestigious junior event.

The format of the event was the best 5 scores over 9 holes – a total of 54 holes were played. Unions that competed were Border, Eastern Province, Free State, North West and Western Province.

With regards to the U13s – the first day ended with WP trailing Border by 7 shots, the 2nd by 1 shot and in the end WP won by a solitary shot. Border 2nd place (1122 shots) and Free State a distant 3rd (1192 shots).

The leading WP U13 players in the top 10 finishers were –

  • 4th Henru Walters           70 73 74=217
  • 5th Francois Steyn           71 72 76=219
  • 6th Booye Walters           79 70 74=223
  • 7th Noah Musikanth       80 76 72=228

Useful team contributions from the 2 youngest team members helped the team considerably –

  • 11 year old Arman Patel 83 79 77
  • 10 year old Evan Marais 83 84 78

The U15s led from start to finish. A final 9 hole stumble assisted North West to gain some ground.

1st WP 1138, 2nd North West 1146 and 3rd Border 1174.

The leading WP U15 players in the top 10 finishers were –

  • 4th Andries van der Vyver            76 69 80=225
  • 4th Jaydon Galant                            75 73 77=225
  • 10th Boston Franks                          77 80 74=231

The other U15 team members also contributed handsomely with Bjorn Nord having a best of 75, Nicolas van der Vyver a great last round of 76 and Tristan Boise a fine 76 middle round.

The U15 team consisted of 5 13 year olds – great tournament experience for all the players.
