Nail biting finish at Katberg Challenge
The beautiful Katberg Eco Golf Estate hosted the 2021 Katberg Challenge U13/U15 Interprovincial.
The course was in superb condition with the greens being particularly good. Overall the weather was perfect during the three tournament days – ideal windless golfing conditions.
The forerunner to the Katberg Challenge was the Fish River Challenge – Western Province (WP) first competed in 2004. The latter ended in 2017 and this being the 3rd occasion that the event was held at Katberg (the 2020 edition was cancelled due to Covid). Western Province has a proud record in this prestigious junior event.
The format of the event was the best 5 scores over 9 holes – a total of 54 holes were played. Unions that competed were Border, Eastern Province, Free State, North West and Western Province.
With regards to the U13s – the first day ended with WP trailing Border by 7 shots, the 2nd by 1 shot and in the end WP won by a solitary shot. Border 2nd place (1122 shots) and Free State a distant 3rd (1192 shots).
The leading WP U13 players in the top 10 finishers were –
- 4th Henru Walters 70 73 74=217

- 6th Booye Walters 79 70 74=223

The U15s led from start to finish. A final 9 hole stumble assisted North West to gain some ground.
