Royal Cape Golf Club members, 18-year-old Jan Stals van Rooyen, and 15-year-old Jungwi Lee, have figured prominently in the first few local junior golf events of the 2022 calendar.

In the first event at Parow (3rd January), Jungwi Lee finished a close 2nd behind Jack Buchanan after a fine 75 in difficult conditions – Jan Stals finished tied 6th on 77. The following day at Kuils River it was Jan Stal’s turn to finish 2nd, this time recording a 71 behind the winner, Craig Jacobs.

On Friday the 7th January at a very warm Bellville GC, Jan Stals van Rooyen walked away with the title after firing a steady 73 – 2 bogeys and a birdie at the par 4 5th hole. Jungwi Lee finished 2nd on 76, winning the count-out from JC Engelbrecht (Pearl Valley).

Then to cap off a great run, both players were involved in a play-off at the KD MOWBRAY Junior Championship on Monday, the 10th January. Both recorded 71s – with Jungwi Lee winning on the 3rd play-off hole. These are really outstanding performances from two extremely hardworking, dedicated and focused young golfers.

Another fine performance at the BELLVILLE Junior Championship on Friday, the 7th January, was AJ van Emmenis in the U13A division winning with a gross 75, closely followed by Vincent Venter (Erinvale) on 77. Other division winners were Uwen Januarie (Fairview) in the B division, on 82, and Isabella Heber (KD Mowbray) with 38 points in the U13B division.

On the 10th January at the KD MOWBRAY Junior Championship saw Jean-Guido Tobias (Somerset West) win a count-out on 79 in the B division from Jared Austin (Atlantic Beach) and Chumani Mgodeli (KD Mowbray). Other division winners were Brandon Floris (Fairview) 35 points in the C division, Jude Samuels (Royal Cape) 79 gross in the U13A and Kaitlyn Rix (Durbanville) 42 points in the U13B.

The first 4 events, namely Parow, Kuils River, Bellville and KD Mowbray, have all formed part of the “2022 Championship Tour” with Jack Buchanan, Craig Jacobs, Jan Stals van Rooyen and Jungwi Lee respectively all qualifying to play in the final scheduled later in the year.
