STRAND OPEN 2023 – TRAVIS PROCTER TAME THE STRAND

Located between the breath-taking Hottentots-Holland Mountain Range and the white sandy shoreline of False Bay Beach, Strand Golf Club enjoys one of the most stunning panoramic vistas natures can offer golf fans. An impeccable course set the scene for a memorable day of golf.

In optimal playing conditions, players were able to take advantage of low scoring opportunities.

There were over 60 players competing for the prestigious Strand Open trophy during the 36-hole stroke play event.

Following Round 1, Travis Procter (Durbanville) held a three-shot lead after posting a 68 (-4). This score included four birdies, one eagle, and two dropped shots.

Procter was closely followed by Atlin van der Merwe (Bellville) and Philip Taberer (Erinvale), both scoring 71 (-1), respectively.

A hole in one by Philip on the 8th Hole, par 3, was the highlight of the round.

The second round began shakily for Travis as he made a double bogey on the fourth hole, opening up a slight opening for Altin and Philip to catch up, but Travis quickly regained his composure, making a birdie on the fifth hole.

Philip took the lead after 23 holes after birdies on holes one, two and five. After having a very up and down round, Altin came back into contention when he birdied fifteen and eagled sixteen.

Philip’s lead, however, was short-lived when Travis came back strong with 5 birdies on holes 11, 12, 13, 15 and 16 on his way to winning by five shots.

It came down to a count-out on the back nine to determine the runner-up and third place, with Altin van der Merwe taking the crown from Philip Taberer.

The players both posted rounds of 71 and 70.

Ashley Huysamen has been in outstanding form in recent weeks, winning both the Durbanville Ladies’ and Devonvale Ladies’ Club Champs. She continued her winning streak at the Strand Open. She gained immediate traction with a 37 on the front, finishing round 1 with 77 two shots ahead of her closest rival. Ashley’s second round was even more impressive when she posted a 71. This featured birdies on holes 2, 7, 10, 11, 15 & 17, a drop shot on hole 3, and two double bogeys on holes 12 & 13.
