CAPE TOWN, 9 October 2019 – Western Province and Eastern Province laid down a marker for success on day three in the South African Mid-Amateur Inter-Provincial Tournament at King David Mowbray Golf Club.

A-SECTION

Western Province caused a major upset of this year’s tournament with an emphatic 8.5 – 3.5 victory over defending champions Central Gauteng.

Under pressure to build points and game points after their first round loss to Gauteng North, the local favourites used their rest day to regroup and came into the third round guns blazing.

Western Province dominated the foursomes to take a 3-1 lead and Greg Sheard and Shaun le Roux, playing at eight and seven, kept the momentum alive with 3 & 2 wins.

Riaan Lewis, Adrian Ford and Cameron Johnston racked up 3 more points and Elton James at number two halved with Kevin Sharp to end the Lions’ unbeaten run.

Gauteng North, meanwhile, put pedal to the metal.

The Daisies gunned to double victories in their three-way match, routing Ekurhuleni 7 – 5 and mowing down Free State 8.5 – 3.5. A profitable day catapulted Gauteng North to the top of the log with 10 points and 40 game points.

The Daisies will have a relaxing bye on Thursday, while Central Gauteng will have to keep an eye on the action, having slipped to second on 8 points.

Ekurhuleni downed Free State 8 – 4 to secure their first points in the tournament. Ekurhuleni moved to fourth in the standings behind Western Province, who holds third place with 4 points. Both teams will be hungry to bank more points in round four.

Western Province will tussle with Free State and KwaZulu-Natal and Ekurhuleni goes head-to-head to Southern Cape.

B-SECTION

Eastern Province was in a strong position in the battle for promotion after victories over Boland and North West in their first round opener and the side fired their way to the top of the log on Wednesday further success in their three-way match against Northern Cape and Border.

Taking the lead in both foursomes, Eastern Province powered their way to a 9.5 -2.5 win against Northern Cape and a 7.5 – 4.5 victory against Border.

Francois van Coppenhagen (7 & 6), Johnny Ludick (5 & 3), Dillon Germshuys (4 & 3) racked up 3 more points in the singles to secure win, but despite looking at a definite loss, Border’s bottom order rallied magnificently to limit the damage.

Steven Pope turned the tide when he ousted Eastern Province number one Attie Burger 3 & 2, Sunil Pillay edged Michael Bezuidenhout 2 & 1, Udesh Pillay and Charl Joubert both won 1-up and Charl Joubert fought Hugo Maritz all the way to the 18th to win 1-up.

The final match between Rhalf Manuel and Norman Phillips ended appropriately in a draw.
