Shaun Le Roux Completes the Three-Peat at Bellville Golf Club

The 2026 Western Province Mid-Amateur Championship delivered two days of quality golf, changing conditions and a dramatic finish at Bellville Golf Club.

The championship got underway on Thursday, with the players facing challenging and windy conditions around Bellville. The wind made club selection difficult and demanded patience, accuracy, and control from the field, ensuring that every shot counted from the very beginning.

After 18 demanding holes, Andrew Georgiou of Erinvale Golf Club held the early advantage after producing the lowest round of the day among the leading contenders with a 71.

Just two shots behind him were defending champion Shaun Le Roux of Milnerton Golf Club, who opened with a 73. Le Roux was joined on 73 by Petrus Jurgens Visser of Bellville Golf Club, Christian Basson of Atlantic Beach Links, and Wendell Bossenger of The Country Club Johannesburg.

A further shot back, Philip Taberer of Erinvale Golf Club, Gerlou Roux of Bellville Golf Club, and Ian Truter of Somerset West Golf Club all carded 74s, keeping themselves firmly within striking distance of the leaders.

Adam Johannes Stander of Stellenbosch Golf Club completed the leading group with a 76, meaning the championship remained wide open heading into Friday’s final round.

With only a handful of shots separating the leading players, all eyes turned towards the final round, where the championship was still very much anyone’s to win.

Friday morning brought a completely different Bellville Golf Club. The wind had eased, and the A.M. field was welcomed by beautiful playing conditions, creating the perfect environment for the players to attack the course.

At the centre of the drama was Shaun Le Roux, who knew that a strong final round would be required if he was to defend his title and claim a historic third consecutive championship.

Starting the day on 73, he produced a brilliant 3-under-par 69, the best final round among the leading contenders. His combination of consistency, composure and timely scoring saw him climb to the top of the leaderboard and finish the championship on 2-under-par 142.

Behind him, Philip Taberer put together an excellent final round of 70. Starting with a 74, Taberer’s four-over-par deficit from Le Roux after the opening round was reduced to just two shots by the end of the championship, as he finished runner-up on 144.

Petrus Jurgens Visser produced a second-round 72 to follow his opening 73 and finish on 145, one over par. He was joined in third place by Christian Basson, who also carded a 72 after his opening 73, giving both players a two-round total of 145.

Wendell Bossenger maintained his consistency throughout the championship, following his opening 73 with another 73 on Friday. His combined score of 146 saw him finish fifth overall at two over par.

Further down the leaderboard, Adam Johannes Stander bounced back strongly from his opening-round 76 with an excellent 72, finishing on 148. He shared sixth place with local player Gerlou Roux of Bellville Golf Club, who carded consecutive 74s for a total of 148.
